How does Belkyra work?
The active ingredient in Belkyra is Deoxycholic Acid (DCA) which works as an organic compound naturally present in our bodies that helps us digest fat. When injected into the fat beneath your chin, Belkyra causes the fat cells in your double chin to dissolve. Once dissolved, the cells cannot store or continue to accumulate fat.
What happens during the procedure?
Your procedure will begin with a consultation session in order to discuss the best treatment to achieve the desired chin profile the patient is looking for and to discuss the estimated number of treatments the physician deems appropriate. Once the physician and patient have agreed on a suitable treatment plan and the physician has deemed the candidate suitable to receive Belkyra, the patient is ready for their first session.
What should you expect during Belkyra injections?
You should expect to experience some level of discomfort during the procedure. A topical or local anesthetic will be used to numb the area before any needles are inserted. Afterward, you will be given a series of injections under the jawline and neck area. In order to ensure accuracy, the injection site will be marked beforehand. During one treatment, you could get anywhere between 20 to 50 shots, which will all be administered beneath the lower jawline. Patients may be asked to stay on their back for a few minutes following the procedure to make sure no complications occur. Patients may also be administered a cold pack in order to combat any heat or swelling to the area.
How long is a Belkyra treatment?
After consulting with one of our physicians here in Montreal, the injection treatment usually takes anywhere between 15-20 minutes. Depending on the severity of the submental fullness, you may need anywhere between two to six treatments to achieve your desired results with Belkyra however usually optimal results are achieved between 2-4 treatment sessions spaced a month apart. Your doctor will estimate the number of treatments you will require during your initial consultation which you can then continue to reevaluate during each treatment session and adjust your treatment plan accordingly.
What is the downtime following a Belkyra treatment?
Since Belkyra is a non surgical procedure, there is little to no downtime in comparison to its surgical counter parts and none of the stitches or scarring! Belkyra is also relatively pain-free!
At first the treatment area will typically feel warm to the touch and the patient will have some temporary swelling that lasts a few days to a week. The downtime following a Belkyra treatment varies from person to person depending on the severity of swelling, bruising and redness in the treatment area. Patients are able to return to their normal activities immediately following the procedure but are encouraged to let their own comfort be the guide as to when they’d like to resume physical activity. Those who have received the procedure have also commonly reported some numbness following the treatment plan.
Patients can use gentle massage on the area a few times a day in order to reduce any numbness, tightness or swelling. Once the swelling starts to go down you will slowly start to see the reduction in the appearance of fullness under the chin and neck area resulting in visible improvements and a more chiseled chin profile.

The large majority of patients who receive Belkyra treatments do not experience any side effects from the injections. You may experience temporary side effects that include bruising, pain, and infection, and in a few instances, short-term paralysis of unintended muscles. What to avoid following a Belkyra treatment
Immediately after receiving the Belkyra treatment you should halt the use of any makeup for 24 hours or if you have any pinpoint bleeding from the treatment, wait until the bleeding has stopped. For 2 weeks after the treatment you should avoid being in any warm and hot environments and avoid sun exposure. If you still have any redness or swelling after two weeks, you should hold off on the heat and sun until this has passed as well.
