Dermal fillers effortlessly restore lost volume and plumpness. Filler treatments are a safe and non-invasive alternative to incisions and longer recovery times associated with traditional cosmetic surgery operations.
Dermal fillers, (also known as face fillers or soft tissue fillers) are injectable products used in the face to give additional volume or restore volume lost with facial aging.
The most commonly used product is hyaluronic acid, which is a natural sugar already present in your body, but usually lasts 24-48 hours. When hyaluronic acid fillers are injected in synthetic form, they last 6-24 months and rejuvenate your facial appearance by restoring lost volume.
Dermal filler treatments are different from neuromodulators, also (incorrectly) called Botox (botulinum toxin), which are products that paralyze muscles and erase dynamic wrinkles and smoothen out the skin.
As we age and exposure ourselves to the sun’s UV rays and an increasing amount of environmental pollutants, our skin ages, loses elasticity, volume, and its youthful appearance.
As a result of this loss, our facial features lose volume and become sunken. That’s where injections of hyaluronic acid come to the rescue.
When injected under the skin, this hyaluronic acid restores this lost volume and rejuvenates the face in the target areas it is injected.
How Long Do Dermal Filler Injections Last?
Injectable facial fillers usually last between 6 months and 2 years.
There are several benefits you can experience from dermal fillers. Fillers are a quick facial rejuvenation option with minimal downtime. They can be performed in less than an hour per facial region by expert hands.
Fillers increase volume-deficient regions in order to give them a more attractive appearance. They can be used to:
While dermal fillers aren’t permanent, they are an extremely long-lasting treatment that can last up a year or longer. This non surgical treatment ensures your face remains young, refreshed, and volumized without the need for invasive surgery.
It’s no surprise that dermal fillers are one of the most popular alternatives to facial plastic surgery with most patients reporting extremely positive results.
Is There Any Downtime Or Recovery Time?
Dermal fillers are safe with minimal downtime. Certain areas, such as lip injections, require a few days of recovery from small bruises, but most bruises elsewhere on the face, if they occur, can be well hidden with makeup.
Like any injection, the most common risks are minimal pain at the site of injection, mild swelling, bruising, and temporary redness. Sometimes, certain patients can suffer from a slight headache the same or next day, and certain patients can have residual movements or asymmetries requiring touch-ups.
Rarely, certain patients can develop an infection, persistent redness, scar formation, nodules or granulomas at the site of injection, or a true allergic reaction to hyaluronic acid. Exceptionally, some cases of loss of vision or tissue necrosis have been reported with soft tissue fillers.
It is important to choose an injector that is conscious of all of these risks, and that knows how to manage all complications. Clinique Face MD puts safety first and is conservative with facial fillers in order to minimize complications. Being a clinic directed by a surgeon specifically trained and specialized in the facial area offers an advantage in terms of knowledge of facial anatomy that helps avoid zones at risk for complications.
Finally, like any cosmetic procedure, there is a risk of not being satisfied with the result. After a proper consultation that includes a complete examination and photo evaluation, our professionals can generally produce the results desired by the patient.
However, we do not control the response of tissues to injections, and sometimes repeated injections are necessary to achieve a more evident result. However, as hyaluronic acid is generally safe when used in a proper way by a specialist, injections are reversible or amenable to touch-ups depending on each individual patient’s wishes.
Dermal injections are safe and effective for most skin types and any age bracket, including younger patients. Here are 5 key ways to determine if dermal filler treatments are right for you.
1- You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
2- You do not have skin disease at the area you want to inject
3- You want a quick rejuvenation option without downtime
4- Your expectations are realistic
5- A treatment plan has been determined with your facial specialist to discuss what would be most beneficial to you.
A consultation starts with a complete questionnaire and physical examination by trained cosmetic doctors. Photos of the skin and face are taken.
The professionals at Clinique Face MD Montreal always make sure to thoroughly discuss and communicate what is and is not possible with dermal injections in order to better manage patient expectations of results.
Next, we talk about the actual procedure. Your professional takes the time to answer any and all questions you may have.
Patients often choose to receive their injections on the same day as the consultation.
First, start by listing in order of importance the facial features you would like to enhance by listing the areas that bother you the most.
Second, if you have had prior facial injections, try to find the date as well as the products and quantities that were injected.
Depending on the quantity of product injected as well as the number of facial zones treated, a typical injection session lasts anywhere between 30 minutes and one hour.
We use a gentle and safe numbing topical anesthetic cream for most commonly treated areas.
For other injections, such as lip augmentation, we can sometimes perform a lip block using tiny needles and a local anesthetic, which eliminates pain completely during treatment.
Some patients opt to not receive any anesthesia, whether it is topical or with an injection, and we respect that choice as facial fillers are also very well tolerated without any anesthesia.
When injections are performed on patients that do not have thin blood due to disease or medication, and when we take particular care to avoid small veins, bruising is rare. This is however possible, and bruises are easily hidden with make-up starting the following day.
Lips are specifically at risk for bruising and this often happens for a few days after the injection. The professionals at Clinique Face MD will give you all the tricks to minimize this swelling. Other areas of the face do not tend to swell as much. However, the vast majority of patients return to their usual activities the next day no matter the injected area.
When choosing where to get your cosmetic medispa treatment or cosmetic plastic surgery, make sure to ask the following questions.
1- Does this person have proper and deep understanding of facial anatomy?
2- Is this person trained in used a proper and safe injection technique?
3- Does this person know all the risks of facial fillers and know how to take care of complications if they happen?
4- Do you feel confident in your injector during your consultation?
