Blepharoplasty Montreal - Rejuvenate your face with an eyelid surgery in Montreal

The eyes are the most prominent feature of the face and the first thing people notice. Unfortunately, the eyes are often the first facial feature to show signs of aging. As we age, the skin and muscles around the eyes begin to loosen and relax, resulting in a sagging appearance.

A blepharoplasty or aesthetic eyelid surgery restores a more youthful and rested appearance and improves self-confidence.

What is a blepharoplasty surgery?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift, is a cosmetic procedure that rejuvenates the appearance of the eyelids. It can be performed on the lower or upper eyelids. Eyelid surgery is performed by removing or repositioning excess skin, muscle, and fat.

This procedure can sometimes require tightening of the lower eyelid to avoid malposition of the eyelid after surgery. Blepharoplasty does not eliminate small wrinkles but improves the tired and aging appearance of the eyes. It can be combined with other cosmetic procedures on the face, like botox to relax wrinkles.

What types of blepharoplasty do you perform?

Dr. Moubayed performs a range of cosmetic surgeries including:

  • Upper eyelid blepharoplasty
  • Lower eyelid surgery
  • Forehead (and eyebrow) lifting
  • Neuromodulator (botox) injections
  • Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers
  • Fat injections around the eyes.

Upper blepharoplasty - Upper eyelid surgery

With age, the skin of the upper eyelid may begin to loosen and sag, leaving you with a tired or an angry expression. Excess skin hanging down over your eyelid margin may obstruct your view, prevent you from applying cosmetics properly, and make you feel self-conscious about wearing contact lenses. Blepharoplasty (upper eyelid surgery) can give you a fresh, awake and happy new look.

Lower blepharoplasty - Lower eyelid surgery

Similar to upper blepharoplasty, lower eyelid lifts are cosmetic procedures designed to improve the appearance of the eyes. They reduce the signs of aging around the eyes such as excess skin, puffiness and dark shadows. These changes can create a younger, healthier appearance: eyelid lifts can also enhance your facial features.

How is a blepharoplasty performed?

1 - Patient is put under local or general anesthesia before the eye surgery

During surgery, medications may be given to help you relax and feel comfortable. You may receive different types of medication: sedation by mouth, IV sedation or general anesthesia (GA). Your doctor will determine which option is best for you.

2 - The plastic surgeon makes incisions and operates on the eyelids

Upper lid blepharoplasty surgery involves removing excess skin from beneath the lower eyelids and reshaping them. Fat can then be repositioned or completely excised. A lower blepharoplasty involves removing excess skin, and sometimes fat, above the eyes to create the appearance of a younger refreshed eyelid fatty tissue under the eyes, tightening the underlying muscle, and removing extra facial folds of loose, hanging, wrinkled or sagging tissue.

3 - Healing the eyelid surgery incisions

Incisions made to operate on eyelids are usually closed using sutures. Stitches will be removed by the surgeon or his nurse after a few days. Do not worry too much about the incisions looking obvious: eyelid surgery scars are designed to look natural within the natural creases of the eyelids, and are barely visible after a few months.

How to prepare yourself for a consultation for blepharoplasty

It is a good idea to prepare yourself for your consultation and this is easily done.

First, prepare to list in order of importance the elements you would like to improve around your eyes: brow position, upper lids, lower lids, skin colour, excess skin, or fat. Are there any other regions that bother you in your face such as your jowls, neck, chin, nose, or lips?

Finally, if you have had cosmetic soft tissue fillers to the face or around the eyes, try to find out which products were injected and when. If you have already had facial surgery, try to bring the operative report of your prior procedures if this is possible.

How long does it take to perform a blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a procedure of safety, finesse, and precision. Depending on the number of eyelids and associated techniques, it can last between 45 minutes and 2 hours.

What happens during a consultation for blepharoplasty?

A consultation starts with a complete questionnaire and physical examination. Photos are taken and analyzed with your surgeon. This is an essential communication tool as some patients want changes that are not always possible in surgery.

Then, we talk about surgery and recovery, and Dr. Moubayed answers any and all questions you may have. Your surgeon will discuss all blepharoplasty eyelid surgery options including surgery on the lower eyelids, upper eyelids.

Multiple consultations are sometimes necessary before deciding to proceed with surgery. Cosmetic facial surgery is an important decision to make and it is important that you are well informed before proceeding with it.

Are there nonsurgical or minimally invasive alternatives to cosmetic blepharoplasty?

Certain carefully selected patients can benefit from minimally invasive injectable fillers or resurfacing procedures and obtain excellent rejuvenation results. Some patients who want more permanent results can benefit from fat injections around the eyes.

However, nothing replaces consultation with a cosmetic surgeon that can offer the whole breadth of nonsurgical and surgical facial rejuvenation procedures to be able to determine which one is best suited for your individual face.

Dr. Moubayed can counsel patients on the best individually tailored type of procedure, according to their facial aging profile.

What are the risks of blepharoplasty?

Like any surgery, an upper lid blepharoplasty and lower eyelid blepharoplasty presents the universal (but minimal) risks of scarring, bleeding (and bruising), infection (superficial or deep), and pain (temporary or permanent).

However, the main risk of any cosmetic surgery is to not be satisfied with the result. After a proper consultation that includes a complete examination and photo evaluation, Dr. Moubayed can generally produce the results desired by the patient. However, we do not control the healing of tissues, and some patients heal in an unpredictable way producing asymmetries, irregularities that can sometimes require touch-ups.

Potential complications following an eyelid surgery

Any eyelid surgeries include the rarer risks of lagophthalmos (inability to close the eye), malposition of the eyelids due to bad scarring, injury to muscles around the eyes, strabismus, dry eyes, or temporary or permanent loss of eyelashes. Finally, any surgery around the eyes carries a very rare risk of vision loss.

The most important factor in eyelid surgery is conservatism (not being too aggressive). Dr. Moubayed combines a conservative and individualized approach to each patient and has extensive training in facial surgery. All patients are followed closely after surgery with very precise and very clear instructions. All of this is done in order to minimize the risks listed above.

Things You Should Know Before Getting Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty: Frequently Asked Questions for Cosmetic Blepharoplasty Surgery.

How much does a blepharoplasty surgery cost in Montreal? The answer is dependent on a number of factors, such as:

  • The level of experience of a plastic surgeon, and his track record when performing this type of plastic surgery;
  • The anesthesia (local anesthesia or general anesthesia) used during the upper eyelid or lower eyelid lift surgery;
  • How many eyelids are operated on by the plastic surgeon.

And many more! It is important to know that cosmetic blepharoplasty is not covered by Quebec medical insurance if done with a purely aesthetic objective. Therefore, we recommend anyone interested in eye lift surgery to book a consultation with Dr. Moubayed to discuss their options. With over 3,500 successful surgeries, we believe that Dr. Sami Moubayed is the best option to improve your vision and eliminate signs of aging.

They are two different procedures.
Sometimes, it is rather the heaviness of the eyebrows that causes a tired appearance, due to the eyebrows being positioned lower than the ideal desired position. Only a consultation will help identify whether the right procedure for you is a forehead lift or a blepharoplasty.

Blepharoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia, local anesthesia with sedation, or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of surgery, the patient’s wishes and other associated procedures.

For general anesthesia, the type of anesthesia used is total intravenous anesthesia (without using anesthetic gasses). This type of anesthesia is safe and helps reduce nausea and coughing after surgery. Our patients often report how positive their anesthesia experience was.

Patients leave the surgical center the same day and recover at home with very precise instructions.

Your first post-operative appointment will take place 5 to 7 days later, where your stitches will be removed and your wound will be examined.

Bruises can persist for up to two or three weeks. This is the recommended recovery time for cosmetic surgery around the eyes.

Light physical activity can be resumed after a week, but for more vigorous activities like weightlifting, it is recommended to wait three weeks to minimize bleeding risk.

Most of our patients are presentable after one week. However after three weeks, you will be very presentable in society and could even go for a professional photo shoot. The majority of swelling decreases over the first three months, but minimal (barely visible) swelling can persist for up to a year. If you do not make a full recovery, do not hesitate to contact Clinique Face MD.

  • Does your surgeon have specific expertise in facial surgery, specifically eyelid surgery, and anatomy to be able to minimize complications?
  • Can your surgeon perform all types of procedures around the eyes to be able to choose which one is most adapted to your needs?
  • Did you have a positive experience and feel comfortable during your consultation?
  • Your eyes have a tired or angry appearance;
  • You do not have eye disease or dry eyes;
  • You are in good health;
  • You do not smoke;
  • Your expectations are realistic.

Certain carefully selected patients can benefit from minimally invasive injectable fillers or resurfacing procedures and obtain excellent rejuvenation results. Some patients who want more permanent results can benefit from fat injections around the eyes.

However, nothing replaces consultation with a cosmetic doctor that can offer the whole breadth of nonsurgical and surgical facial rejuvenation procedures to be able to determine which one is best suited for your individual face. Possibilities include:

  • CO2 laser resurfacing;
  • Morpheus8 radiofrequency microneedling;
  • Botox;
  • Dysport;
  • Fat grafting to the eyelids
  • Dermal fillers;
  • PDO thread lift.

Popular associated procedures are Evoke facial contouring, Facetite facial contouring, forehead and brow lift, face and neck lift. Dr. Moubayed can counsel patients on the best individually tailored type of procedure, according to their facial aging profile.
