What is hair transplantation?

Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure performed under local anesthesia to move hair follicles from areas of high density (mainly the back of the head) to areas of lower or no density (like the crown or the front of the head). It is essentially a redistribution of the hair in order to densify thinning areas of the scalp. The results of a hair transplant are permanent because hair from the back of the head maintains its characteristics when it is moved to the front of the head. These procedures take a whole day (8 to 12 hours) to perform.

What are the benefits of hair transplantation?

There are many benefits to FUE hair transplantation:

  • The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia with minimal pain
  • It does not leave a large scar at the back of the head like a strip hair transplant
  • The scars left by the procedure (usually in the back of the head) are microscopic and practically invisible to the naked eye, regardless of the size of the hair
  • It has very high success rates of hair graft survival, usually above 95%
  • It creates a very natural look thanks to the small size of the transplanted hair
  • Unlike strip hair transplants, this is a painless procedure. No stitches are used, allowing for a quick and safe recovery
  • Potential for hiding scars in the scalp
  • This hair transplantation is permanent, so you can enjoy it for many years
  • Hair can be transplanted to the head, or to other areas of the face, such as the brows or the beard

What are the alternatives to hair transplantation?

There are many different hair treatments for baldness, including products that must be used for life, such as minoxidil or finasteride. Other alternatives for hair restoration are scalp micro-pigmentation (SMP) treatments (semi-permanent tattoo), and PRP injections. However, none of these procedures stimulate new hair growth where there is no hair. Rather, they increase the density of existing hair.

How is FUE hair transplantation different from traditional (FUT or strip) hair transplantation?

Traditional or follicular unit transplantation (FUT), also known as strip hair transplant, is when a surgeon harvests a strip of hair from the back of the head, leaving a large linear scar at the back of the head that can be very unsightly. The hair follicles are then separated under the microscope and replanted elsewhere on the head.

A follicular unit extraction procedure is when the surgical team uses micro-punches to extract the hair follicles individually from the back of the head. These hair follicles are then replanted elsewhere on the head. This procedure is a lot more challenging technically, but avoids the creation of a large linear scar at the back of the head. This is why this is the procedure that we prefer at Face MD.

Who is a candidate for FUE hair transplantation?

The origins of hair loss are diverse and before taking any steps, it is important to try to determine the cause as closely as possible. The complexity of this determination comes from the fact that hair can fall out according to physiological parameters, but also following psychological problems. A great deal of fatigue caused by an illness, a heavy treatment such as chemotherapy, a difficult pregnancy, but also the taking of certain poorly tolerated medications, can lead to hair loss. In these cases, things return to normal relatively quickly when the situation returns to normal or when the treatment is changed. Where things sometimes get complicated is when baldness is caused by a situation of intense stress, in which case it will depend on how long the difficult situation lasts. When all these causes are eliminated, it is most often necessary to admit that the baldness is androgenetic and therefore irremediable. Any person subject to permanent hair loss is a candidate for this type of procedure, or men and women who want hair where they have little or none.

How many grafts are approximately required for hair transplantation?

In any case, the younger you are, the less advanced your baldness is (this is called incipient baldness). Moreover, if the upper edges of the crown do not show any thinning, and the frontal and temporal lines do not recede, we can ensure a successful and perfectly natural and aesthetic hair transplantation.

Obviously, no two people are alike, so individual differences such as the size of your scalp can affect your follicle density.

When you consider all of these factors determining hair follicle density, you’ll notice that there won’t be precise answers to questions like “how many grafts are needed for the crown?” Depending on your follicular density, the amount of your scalp that would be covered with a given number of grafts could change. However, there are methods to provide a rough model estimate on the types of hair loss seen in male hair loss patients.

How long does it take to see results with FUE hair transplantation?

The result of a hair transplant is considered definitive after one year. Of course, the preliminary results will be visible much earlier. After the hair transplant, the grafts will start to fall out after a few weeks. This is completely normal, there is no reason to worry. Afterwards, nothing special happens for a while, before the hair starts to grow back after 4 to 6 months. Hair regrowth is slow and varies from patient to patient. In most cases, the changes are most visible 6 to 10 months after the operation. The hair gains in density month after month. After the 11th month, results with significant improvement are still to be expected, which is why we can only speak of definitive results after 12 months.

How is a FUE hair transplantation performed?

The hair transplant by FUE is a painless procedure because it is performed under local anaesthesia.

The duration of the hair transplant by FUE is 6 hours minimum, it depends on the number of grafts taken (500 to 1500 Follicular Units per procedure).

On the donor area, a strip of hair is shaved to facilitate the extraction of follicular units. The shaved hair grows back in a few days and the donor area becomes undetectable.

There are very few contraindication to FUE, but the indications must be well established during consultations prior to any intervention.

In case of severe baldness, it is possible to consider several interventions to obtain a satisfactory result. When the baldness is too severe, we will rather offer scalp micropigmentation (semi-permanent tattoo).

Hair transplantation by FUE provides natural results. No scar is made on the donor area.

After the operation, the patients resumes their normal activity, and specific shampoos are recommended to allow a good hygiene of the transplanted areas.

What are the risks of FUE hair transplantation?

Hair transplantation is an operation that presents minimal health risks. Its success is easier when the patient has a good blood circulation of the scalp. However, even if this is not the case, the equipment used by Clinique Face MD is sufficiently appropriate to ensure the success of the operation.

The operation is always done under local anaesthesia, which makes it painless for the patient. After the procedure, the patient may feel some pressure on the forehead with slight swelling. The doctor usually prescribes antibiotics and/or anti-inflammatories to avoid possible infections and swelling of the eyes and/or forehead.

Things You Should Know Before Getting FUE hair transplantation

FUE Hair Transplantation: Frequently Asked Questions for Cosmetic FUE Hair Transplantation.

In the case of a hair transplant, the implanted hair will resume its normal growth cycle and will have the same life span as the hair in the donor area.

At Face MD, we use the Devroye WAW hair transplantation device. The Devroye WAW is a smooth funnel shaped hair extraction device that enters the skin gently, and removes the donor hair follicles with minimal trauma. It was designed in Belgium by Dr. Devroye, a world leader in hair transplantation surgery.

We can perform hair transplantation to restore eyebrow or beard hair. Hair follicles to be used outside the neck area can be harvested from a few areas of the body and then transferred to the hair transplant area.
