What is CO2 laser resurfacing?
CO2 or carbon dioxide laser resurfacing is a procedure that uses a laser to improve the appearance of skin or treat minor facial flaws by removing layers of skin. It’s become the go-to laser resurfacing option for treating a range of skin concerns including pigmentation, fine lines, deep wrinkles, acne scarring, skin sagging, and sun-damaged skin.
How does CO2 laser skin resurfacing work?
A CO2 Laser uses tiny laser beams to treat areas of the skin. Laser beams focus on the water in your skin and gradually remove tiny columns in your skin to a precise degree and depth. Your skin can promote rapid healing without affecting surrounding areas.
CO2 fractional lasers are known as ablative lasers that go deeper into the skin vs Fraxel lasers.
The practitioner will start by applying a local anesthetic, followed by the use of a handheld laser device which is used to scan across the face and neck in a grid-like pattern until the entire area has been treated.

What are the benefits of fractional laser treatments?
Before the CO2 laser resurfacing treatment, you will typically have a consultation with a facial specialist and doctor . During this consultation, they will evaluate your skin type and condition, discuss your medical history and any medications you are taking, and explain the risks and benefits of the treatment. They may also give you instructions on how to prepare for the treatment, such as avoiding sun exposure and certain medications.
On the day of the treatment, you will arrive at the clinic and have the treatment area cleaned and numbed with a local anesthetic. The treatment itself typically takes between 30 minutes to one hour, depending on the extent of the treatment. During the treatment, the laser will be applied to the skin in a controlled manner, removing the superficial layer of skin and stimulating the growth of new skin cells.
After the treatment, you may experience redness, swelling, and some discomfort. Your facial professional may prescribe pain medication and antibiotics to prevent infection. It is important to follow post-procedure instructions carefully, including avoiding sun exposure and certain skincare products, and keeping the treated area clean and moisturized.
In the first few days after the treatment, you may experience some peeling and crusting of the skin. This is a normal part of the healing process and should be expected. It is important to avoid picking at the treated area or applying makeup until the skin has fully healed. In the weeks and months following the treatment, you will notice a significant improvement in the appearance of your skin, with a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, and acne scarring.
It is important to keep in mind that the healing time and results can vary depending on the extent of the treatment, your skin type and condition, and your overall health. It is important to follow up with your facial professional regularly to monitor your progress and discuss any

What is the recovery time from a CO2 laser procedure?
Co2 laser treatments are non-surgical and non-invasive cosmetic procedures, however, patients should prepare for 1-2 weeks of downtime before resuming social activities, work, and school. Here is what you can expect:
- Immediately after the procedure, the first 3 hours you will experience discomfort similar to a bad sunburn.
- The treated area shows an erythema (redness). This redness can remain for a few days (7-14 days). In some cases, a pinkish appearance of the skin may last several weeks and/or even months (3-6) depending on the type of treatment.
- You may experience small spots of bleeding and/or yellowish (plasma) discharge.
- Swelling usually sets in within hours of the procedure and may last a few days.
- The skin may feel warm and tighter than usual. The redness will change the colour on the second day, appearing browner (tanning), and each subsequent day the colour will appear darker. You will notice that the process of peeling off the dark upper layers of skin cells will begin on about the fourth day. DO NOT RUB HARD or try to accelerate the exfoliation process.
- You must apply only Aquafor or V-stat de vivier ointment for 7 days until the peeling process is complete (see post-treatment instructions below)
- You may experience itching. In this case, you can apply a cortisone cream (Dr. Sami Moubayed prescription) starting day 3 post treatment and following the instructions. This prescription will be given the day of the procedure.
- In some cases, temporary hyperpigmentation *HP may develop following the procedure and may last a few weeks or months. If this happens, a 4% hydroquinone cream will be prescribed by the Doctor.
- Results vary from one individual to another and can be seen within 3 to 6 months following the procedure.

What are the CO2 post-care instructions?
After your laser resurfacing treatment, follow these tips to promote healing and reduce the chances of negative side effects.
- WASH YOUR HANDS THOROUGHLY, EVERY TIME, BEFORE TOUCHING YOUR FACE.
- Immediately after the procedure, the professional will apply a thin layer of Aquaphor ointment. It is essential to continue this application for 7 days following the procedure. Repeat 4 to 5 times a day after each compress *water/vinegar if necessary. The skin should always have a thin layer of Aquaphor or Vstat Vivier ointment. If you are using a jar of ointment rather than a tube, it is important to NOT put your fingers directly into the jar. Please use a clean spoon or a tongue depressor to take the product.
- The treated area must be washed only the day after the procedure. Clean with a mild cleanser (e. g. hexam-vivier) and use your fingers only. Do small circular motions and be gentle with the treated area. DO NOT use a washcloth to clean the treated area.
- For your comfort and to avoid infection (in a very rare case) for 7 days following the procedure, you must do the *compress with soak vinegar every 3-4 hours. *2 cups of cold water and one teaspoon of distilled white vinegar). Use a clean washcloth or 4×4 non-sterile pads and soak them in the solution. Place on the treated area for 5 minutes. After each compresses, reapply ointment if necessary. This step will also help to exfoliate dead skin cells over the next 7 days.
- Following this routine for 7 days; clean every morning with gentle cleanser, do compresses with soak vinegar every 3-4 hours for 5 minutes and then reapply Aquafor or V-stat de vivier ointment after each compress if needed.
- If you experience itching in the following days after the procedure, use the prescription cream and follow the application instructions. DO NOT rub hard or try to facilitate the exfoliation process. It is strongly recommended not to scratch to avoid any complications. You can also take an oral analgesic (e. g. benadryl) to help the itchiness and reduce the inflammation process.
- Make-up application is not recommended FOR 14 DAYS following the procedure. You must avoid NATURAL SUNLIGHT and/or TANNING BOOTHS FOR AT LEAST 4 WEEKS following the procedure and WEAR SUNSCREEN EVERYDAY with a minimum of SPF 50 after the follow-up treatment (7-10 days after the procedure).

What is CO2 Laser resurfacing?
CO2 Laser Resurfacing is a cosmetic procedure that uses advanced laser technology to treat a variety of skin conditions, such as wrinkles, sun damage, and acne scarring. The procedure works by using light beams to remove the superficial layer of skin, allowing new skin cells to regenerate and improve the appearance of the skin.
What types of skin conditions can CO2 laser resurfacing treat?
CO2 Laser Resurfacing is an effective treatment for a variety of skin conditions, including wrinkles, sun damage, acne scarring, liver spots, rough texture, and stretch marks. It is also an effective treatment for skin laxity and loose skin.
Who is a good candidate for CO2 laser resurfacing?
Women and men with damaged skin and various skin conditions may be candidates for CO2 Laser Resurfacing. However, people with certain medical conditions, such as active acne or fungal infections, may not be suitable candidates for the treatment. It is best to consult with a specialist to determine if you are a candidate for laser skin treatment.
What is the difference between fractional resurfacing and extensive resurfacing when it comes to facial resurfacing?
Fractional resurfacing and extensive resurfacing are two types of facial resurfacing techniques that use different laser technologies and have different levels of aggressiveness.
Fractional resurfacing is a type of non-ablative laser treatment that targets only a fraction of the skin with microscopic columns of laser energy. This leaves the surrounding skin tissue intact, allowing for faster healing with minimal thermal damage. Fractional resurfacing is often used to treat mild to moderate skin damage and is less aggressive than extensive resurfacing.
Extensive resurfacing, also known as full-face resurfacing, is a type of ablative laser treatment that removes the entire superficial layer of the skin. This is a more aggressive approach that is typically used to treat severe skin damage, deep wrinkles, and skin laxity. The treatment involves longer recovery time and a higher risk of complications such as scarring and infection.
What is the difference between ablative and non-ablative laser treatments?
Ablative laser treatments, such as carbon dioxide laser resurfacing, use high output power to remove the superficial layer of skin. Non-ablative laser treatments, such as fractional laser resurfacing, use lower output power to create microscopic columns in the skin, leaving the superficial layer intact.
What is the difference between carbon dioxide and erbium laser resurfacing?
Carbon dioxide laser resurfacing is an ablative laser treatment that removes the superficial layer of skin, while erbium laser resurfacing is a non-ablative laser treatment that creates microscopic columns in the skin. Carbon dioxide laser resurfacing is typically more effective for deeper wrinkles and skin laxity, while erbium laser resurfacing is typically better for treating mild to moderate skin damage and aging.
Can CO2 laser resurfacing be performed on black skin?
Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI are not good candidates for the CO2 laser. The risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), which is the darkening of the skin after the treatment, is higher in patients with darker skin tones. Therefore, we may recommend non-ablative treatments or other less aggressive treatments and less likely to cause PIH. It is important to follow post-procedure instructions carefully and avoid direct sun exposure to minimize the risk of PIH.
How long does it take to heal after CO2 laser resurfacing?
The healing time after CO2 Laser Resurfacing varies depending on the extent of the treatment. Patients can expect to experience redness, swelling, and mild scarring for several days to a few weeks after the procedure. It is important to follow post-procedure instructions carefully and avoid direct sun exposure and heavy sun exposure for several weeks after treatment.
What is the risk of infection after CO2 laser fractional resurfacing?
There is a risk of bacterial infection after CO2 laser fractional resurfacing, especially if the patient has an existing medical condition or is taking certain medications. It is important to follow postoperative instructions carefully, including gentle cleansing and avoiding certain skincare products and acne medications. Healthcare professionals may recommend pain medication and antibiotics to prevent infection.
What is the recovery process after CO2 laser treatment?
The recovery process after CO2 Laser Resurfacing involves the natural healing process of the body, which can take several weeks to several months. It is important to avoid direct sun exposure and heavy sun exposure, as well as to use oil-free or green-based makeup to avoid further damage to the skin.
How long do the effects of CO2 laser procedure last?
The effects of CO2 Laser Resurfacing can last for several years, depending on the patient’s skin type, sun exposure, and skincare routine. Patients may require additional treatments to maintain the results of the treatment.
