What is a facial peel?
It is a subtle cocktail of chemical substances, more or less strong depending on the indication to be treated. It mainly contains fruit acids, glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, salicylic acid, etc.
The chemical peel is a technique used to revive the skin’s radiance and reduce imperfections by acting on the skin’s regeneration and cell renewal. By irritating the skin, it is forced to reconstitute and renew itself.
The chemical peel is applied to the skin in order to cause a limited and controlled destruction of the epidermis. Our technician chooses one of the best concentration of the active ingredients of the peel according to each patient.

Who is a candidate for a facial peel?
If an individual is concerned about fine lines and wrinkles, scars, or rough skin texture, a chemical peel can be great for you !
Chemical peels can be superficial, medium or deep, which refers to the number of layers of skin that will be affected by the treatment. As mentioned, superficial peels are generally suitable for the widest variety of skin types and tones, and can give you a brighter, smoother appearance. Since only the top layers of skin are removed with a light chemical peel, a few treatments may be necessary to achieve the desired results or have them done frequently. Medium peels tend to work best for people with darker skin, and can ameliorate minor facial lines wrinkles better than light peels. Deep peels can produce dramatic results, as they remove more layers of skin. This can be more suitable for people with olive tones or have a darker complexion.

What is the difference between a superficial or a deep facial peel?
A superficial peel is the lightest form of peeling. Only the upper layers of the epidermis are destroyed. The substance used is mainly glycolic acid. In most clinics or medispas, the concentration may not exceed 30%, whereas in a dermatologist’s office, it may be as high as 70%.
As for the deep facial peel, it is reserved for deep wrinkles and scars causing a hollow in the skin. The deep peel is used much more rarely than the superficial peels or other forms, because it presents more risks, notably because of the active substance used, phenol. Toxic to the heart, the use of this acid requires cardiac monitoring and local anaesthesia.

What procedures can be combined with a chemical facial peel?
For a chemical peel, it is best to avoid combining other treatments, since a chemical peel can be irritating for certain skin types. However, after a superficial chemical peel, one can always do another treatment days afterwards, depending on the individual’s healing progress.

What are the alternatives to a chemical facial peel?
The alternatives to a chemical peel are the following;
Microdermabrasion:
This treatment is an alternative to a light facial peel to brighten the skin and improve its texture. The procedure involves removing the top layer of dead skin cells. Some newer devices use a diamond-tipped pad to achieve the same goal. Many patients choose microdermabrasion followed by a superficial chemical peel to maximise the potential of both treatments.
BBL Laser:
This treatment aims to restore even pigmentation and reduce brown spots and sun damage. Unlike other chemical peel solutions, IPL can also treat broken capillaries and other vascular irregularities. This makes it a useful treatment for patients with rosacea, birthmarks, and other conditions that cause redness of the skin. Some patients use both IPL and a light chemical peel to treat several skin imperfections.
CO2 Laser:
A carbon dioxide laser (CO²) is an infrared gas laser, which aims to improve skin defects such as wrinkles, scars, hyperpigmentation, etc.
It is an ablative laser that will vaporise the superficial layers of the epidermis and create a dermabrasion. In fractionated mode, its side effects are therefore attenuated, for an excellent clinical result. This allows it to be used on delicate areas where the skin is thin, such as the neck or hands;
- It flattens and destroys the targeted epidermal tissues.
- The thermal effect on the dermis will also act by retracting the collagen fibres, thus restoring the tissues’ firmness.
